AZIENDA AGRICOLA
Cru vineyards  The vineyards lie in four separate sites, each of which has its own distinct wine label.   Comprising a total of 2.2 hectares, they have layouts of 190x90 and 200x90 and are planted to almost6,000 vines per hectare. Yield per vine is quite low, with an overall yield   per hectare of 60-70 quintals. Most of the vineyard work is performed by hand, including pruning,   tying-up, shootthinning, post installation,   leaf-pulling, cluster-thinning, and harvest.   A healthy vine that enjoys balance nutrition and is well managed by the grower can give the fruit superb sensory qualities, always in a well-balanced fashion.
Vineyard locations  The communes of Moraro and Mariano del Friuli lie on the 46 parallel. The soils are classic to the Isonzo river area, derived from the massive Alpine detritus transported by glaciers. The limestone, calcium, and magnesium matrix transported in the watercourses of the interglacial periods produced the rounded th shapes of the rocks that today make up the rapid-draining  bed of the source rock. Through the weathering process of soil formation, the soil surface de-calcified; it was subsequentlyenriched with clay accretions, displacing sand formations, accounting for its current reddish coloration. But soil profiles vary widely, as do their geographical locations in the millenniaold Isonzo valley. One can still make out, in fact, terraces of different ages, as well the influence of watercourses that over the centuries deposited clay and silt accretions from the marl of the hills.
Climate  The nearby Adriatic Sea brings an influx of warm, moist air on many days throughout the year, which rises and turns into rainfall that brings the area some 1350mm of rain per year. The moist air carried by the wind, known as the scirocco, creates a local Mediterranean-type climate, which counter-balancesthe influence of the more continental climate. Blowing from the eastern interior and predominant over the entire Isonzo area is the bora, which can be quite strong but is always cool and dry. Its influence is crucial, from August through October, preserving the aromatic compounds in the grapes.
